What access road does a new ADU or rebuild need?
A rural ADU, new home or rebuild has to meet county fire-safe access rules before it passes. That means at least a 12 foot lane, 15 feet of overhead clearance, limits on how steep the road can be, and turnarounds on long driveways.
Fire access standards drive a lot of the requirements: minimum width, all-weather surface, turnarounds, and grades that emergency vehicles can handle. These apply to many new ADUs and post-fire rebuilds.

The fire-safe standards
County rules set a minimum 12 foot driving lane with 15 feet of overhead clearance. Grades over 15 percent need fire chief approval, with 20 percent the hard limit. The surface has to carry a fire engine in all weather, and the base and top are set by how steep the road is.

Turnarounds and access
Long driveways need a turnaround within 50 feet of the home and pullouts along the way, so an engine can get in and out. We build access to these rules for ADUs, new homes and fire rebuilds, and we confirm the current standards for your parcel with Permit Sonoma before we start.

Access is often the make-or-break item on ADU and rebuild projects. We will assess your driveway against the requirements and lay out exactly what is needed.
